Abstract

In this paper, the project AV Clash will be presented. AV Clash is a Web-based tool for integrated audiovisual expression, created by Video Jack (the author and André Carrilho, with the assistance of Gokce Taskan). In AV Clash, users can manipulate seven “objects” that represent sounds, incorporating audio-reactive animations and graphical user interface elements to control animation and sound. The sounds are retrieved from online sound database Freesound.org, while the animations are internal to the project. AV Clash addresses the following research question: how to create a tool for integrated audiovisual expression, with customizable content, which is flexible, playful to use and engaging to observe? After an introduction to the project, a contextualization with similar works is presented, followed by a presentation of the motivations behind the project, and past work by Video Jack. Then the project and its functionalities are de- scribed. Finally, conclusions are presented, assessing the achievement of the initial aims, and addressing the limitations of the project, while outlining paths for future developments.

Abstract

Heat Seeker is an audio-visual project, which has been released in different formats: performance, video, and website. In this paper, it is contextualized with similar projects that combine music and visuals. The motivation and aims behind Heat Seeker are then presented. The main objective is to combine visuals with sound in an electronic music performance, creating an engaging hypermediated experience for the audience. A description of the project and its development follows, including project extensions to different platforms, such as the Web. Conclusions are reached regarding the accomplishment of the initial aims, which are only partially achieved, particularly in the areas of flexibility of the project and coherence of content. Paths for future developments are then outlined, in terms of additional project extensions and additional projects.

The main objective of the research is to create a tool, entitled “iAVo (Interactive Audio-Visual Objects)”, which allows the integration of visuals in electronic music performances, and to assess the effectiveness of the application regarding the audience of these performances. This tool should provide a visual feedback to real-time sound manipulation and allow an adequate level of integrated audio-visual creative expression. Qualitative and quantitative methods will be used to gather and examine data from the audience of performances conducted in the course of the research. The tool will be analyzed within the theoretical frameworks of media studies, interaction design and history of new media art.

Introduction

Finland as a society and culture has enjoyed an increasingly supported  environment for creative culture or we might call them, creative actors (artists, curators, musicians, creative project groups, etc.). Its education and industry is following a gradual path that allows creative actors to continue to thrive in the future of Finnish culture and society. New education institutions and new approaches in industry (such as in new media), have constantly met the needs of a culture hungry environment. With this constant push from industry and education we might ask, what the future holds for the artist?

Certain questions about the direction of a technology/big industry strong influence will have on the nature of creativity. With education following the path of big industry to meet its need, do we see a different identity for future creative actors? Being tied to industry we might expect then that its success and direction will directly affect creative cultures. Do the traditions of art remain intact or will they be replaced in the future Finnish society? What does the future hold for creative actors if education and industry change direction and abandon the value of creativity? In essence this study seeks to map out various factors in the future of Finland’s creative industry.

Nuno N. Correia was invited by master degree thesis supervisor Manuel Mira Godinho to participate in a study regarding innovation, intellectual property and design by the plastic and molds sectors in Portugal, for the National Institute of Intellectual Property (INPI):

“The second volume of this collection follows the same methodology of the first volume which included the characterization of a set of industrial sectors considered of strategic relevance to the Portuguese economy. This publication intends to deepen the knowledge about the IP use in the Plastic and Moulds sectors: identification and analysis of factors and constraints associated with IP use, actual strategies and protection potentialities with a special regard to the valorisation and commercialization of IPRs.” (from INPI’s digital library website).
